Hello readers, my name is Joel Gowen. I'm currently a freshman attending Michigan State University. I grew up in Dexter, which is right outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan. If you're familiar with southeast Michigan, you know that Ann Arbor is known as a rather art conscious city. Music in the streets, murals around every turn, friendly people hanging out everywhere you look. So needless to say, I've been surrounded by art my whole life. This probably played a big role in developing my love for the arts, specifically graphic arts and design. Currently I am undecided on my major, and I'm not sure at this point whether or not I will be pursuing a degree in Studio Art-Graphic Design at Michigan State University, but I'm definitely considering it. I think my competitive nature, accompanied with some natural talent and the will to expand my knowledge and skills would help me succeed in the field. Hopefully this blog will help me make this decision, for its intentions are to practice building my writing, research and analytical skills, while helping open my eyes to the world of graphic design.
Some of my goals throughout this class are to improve my weaknesses as a writer and to build upon my strengths. I hope to become a more consistent writer. When I write, Ill come up with an impressively well written paragraph or two, but the the rest of my paper is mediocre. I hope to learn techniques and strategies that will allow me to write everything the way I write certain paragraphs.
Another goal I have is to read other students' writings and pick up on effective strategies they used to convey the points, along with the strategies taught in class. If I achieve these goals, I think I will become a more comfortable, confident and consistent writer, which will undoubtedly help me in both my future education and whatever career path I choose to take.
